I don't have the know-how to comment on a relief operation on the size and scope needed to help New Orleans. I don't know enough to comment on the folks who stayed, the folks who left, the folks who are looting, etc. I don't even know if it's LEGAL for our government to send active duty troops into the area, or how long the bureacracy for that is.

I do have a personal story about the Red Cross. When I was 7 years old, a particularly bad stretch of rainfall washed over our city. The city had hired a construction company to do some roadwork in our neighborhood. They screwed up. The sewers backed up and flooded the whole area. Sewage filled up the basements of houses and was 1-2 feet deep on the first floors. Cars were destroyed. On top of that, my father had passed away a few months prior and my mom who had just started working had a whopping $63 dollars in the bank account after paying for the funeral.

The Red Cross came to our rescue. A lady in her forties came to our house and said, "You look like you need help." She then proceeded to check our kitchen cabinets, wading through the water to get there. She said, "Oh... you have enough canned goods to last awhile." So we got no food and got by on cold, canned raviolis and green beans... and warm soda because our water supply was no longer safe. She waded into our bedrooms and said, "Well, you still have an attic and the sheets don't seem wet." So we got no sheets, no housing and lived in an attic on the floor above the cesspool that was our first floor, where much to my amusement these days, the only entertainment I had were books, one of which was The Diary of Anne Frank. She then looked at a map and said, "Well, it seems like everything you could possibly need is within walking distance." So we got no transportation pass. Then she asked, "Do you have a job to go to?" My mother did, so we got no relief. Unfortunately that job was in the next burrough over and we had no transportation pass.

And then she left, went to the neighbor, rinse and repeat. As a community we made it through together. The final settlement? Everyone got $900 after the lawyer got his share. Flood insurance? What flood insurance? I We weren't living in Zimbabwe or even New Orleans. This was F'in New York City... no floods are supposed to happen there. We got our picture taken with Mayor Ed Koch and listened to promises he didn't keep. So honestly, I'm not surprised this is happening in America.

I'm not Christian. Neither is my mother or any of my family, but since that day we only give to church groups when we want to get help to people. Screw the Red Cross. Not even a damn cup of coffee. Watching the news now, I see the Red Cross getting all this cash to help. I see the government pulling troops back because they are getting shot at. And I see religious groups and private citizens from Florida, Texas, Arkansas and all over going straight into HELL to hand out whatever they can afford to give. Take it from a non-Christian and a non-believer. You'll help these folks better by giving to churches, radio stations and other private organizations that will actually brave the danger and go help these people. And speaking of the folks in New Orleans, dont let the few bad apples ruin your view of the bunch. For every misdeed down there, I'm sure folks are finding strength they didn't know they had and are producing one hundred more acts of compassion.

It's not like Louisiana is going to be a hell hole for the rest of time, right?
I don't understand here if you mean "my life doesn't stop for things like this (Weither I am a victim or not)" or "everyone's life doesn't stop for things like this."

I think the lives of many people in the area will be stopped for quit a long time. Perhaps you fail to relise that most estimates say that New Orleans will be uninhabitable for about 10 years, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

Perhaps you have not seen the great degree of death an state-wide Anarchy that has been taking place for the past few days?

I can't see it as a matter of "Oh, they'll get through it." as much I can as a matter of "They'll get through it after a long series of cruxibles, terror, and a great sum money."

Hahah, yes.

EchoSex, I'm sure it was hard for you to recover after your boyfriend broke up with you, you didn't make cheerleading squad, or whatever, but that's not quite the same as seeing your house, family, and everything you had washed away in a hurricane. These things just don't pass.

Agreed 100%: I gave my money to Feed the Children and blankets and canned food to my Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod Grand Canyon branch.

But for every bad story on the RC, I'm sure there are 1000s of good ones too. I'm sorry your experience was so poor.

Ooooh look at the big man! Lmfao, look man, if you come here to try to critisize what I think, your better off competing in the special oylmpics. Know why? 'cause even if you win, your still retarded.

And for the record, take a damn joke, jackass.

You're joking about millions of homeless, and thousands of dying, people? Awesome! But I'm afraid anyone with half a brain can infer that you took up a serious tone in your posts here. Either way, I win, yay, I'm a retard.

But then I'm not trying to win anything, I'm trying to make you feel like an idiot for your ridiculous comments. Your response was that of an idiot, so I guess it worked.

Okay, new guy, maybe your screws are loose and you need to go to Dr Frankenstien to have them tightend up a bit, but maybe the fact is that some people don't agree with you and express their feelings differntly? Or is that just beyond your mental capability?

I'm usually not one for insults, but a response like that to an "idiotic" post makes you no better than the one you're insulting, PieXags thinks we should stop the SHIT and get back on track of the topic.

Look, I don't want to get you to agree with me, I'm just trying to make you understand that this hurricane isn't something that is going to quickly blow over for those affected, and that it's, in fact, quite a big deal. There's nothing to argue with there, it's absurd to suggest otherwise.

Yes, I know things like this happen all the time, but that doesn't devalue the importance of this situation at all.

My six inch cubic world? Who's the one showing a complete lack of compassion and understanding for what is going on?

Pie, no? Responding to a stupid post doesn't make that post stupid as well.

Really, the only person out of line here is you. Sure, it's the internet, you have your free speach and all of that rubbish, but to make jokes about a current natural disaster and then call the person who thinks you're serious an idiot?

I didn't hear many people making fun of those who died in the attacks on the World Trade Centers when they happend; which was pretty close to where you live (And signifigantly less people died in them).

Oh please, if your going to cry over a wisecrack then I guess Mencia is right when he said "your not allowed to have feelings anymore." It's not like I was the one who posted the picture of the cartoon beating the crap out of Louisiana

She can joke about unimaginable losses but I can't even make a slightly heated point. Love this girl's reasoning.

Has anyone noticed that on the front of your newspaper or mine at least it has picture of the looters and they're all black. And most of the same thing on the news channels. My mom saw that and just went off.
